The gospel of John was written to the 2nd generation church. That is, the church who would no longer have an eye witness to Jesus’ death. John was aware that his death was no longer in the distant future. How will the church survive, no longer having an eye witness to minister and encourage them? Today, all Christians are members of that 2nd generation church. When we have failed, or grow discouraged, or at times even unsure of our faith does the Apostle John have anything to say to us that will encourage and strengthen us?
