How Jesus Used Scripture

Jesus used scripture (Old Testament) regularly as he interacted with His disciples and others.  We will explore how He used scripture using 2 Timothy 3:16-17 as the scaffolding to do this.

Teaching – Upon appearing to 2 men returning to Emmaus from Jerusalem, after Jesus’ crucifixion, Luke tells of Jesus appearing to them and opening scripture to them so that they would understand the plan of salvation as found in the Old Testament.

Rebuking – Immediately after describing Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist, Matthew tells of God’s Spirit leading Jesus into the wilderness where He was confronted by Satan.  Satan used scripture to temp Jesus.  Jesus used Old Testament scripture to fend off these temptations.

Correcting – John tells the story of Jesus traveling through Samaria and speaking to a Samaritan Woman.  During that encounter, the woman spars with Jesus over where the most hallowed ground is located for worship.  During that discussion, Jesus slays many mischaracterizations held, not only by the Samaritans, but also by the Jews.

Training – Prior to ascending to heaven, Luke tells of Jesus instructing His disciples how they should approach their evangelistic duties after His departure.  This instruction was closely related to the teaching He did on the way to Emmaus. Perhaps from this we gain a better understanding of what our approach should be anytime we bring people to God.
